The playbook

The run starts read-only: the recon probes decide what happens next. The steps that follow are adapted to the distribution and state found — a real machine is rarely clean.

  1. 01recondistro, version and package manager (apt or dnf)
  2. 02reconDocker Engine + compose plugin present and running? (otherwise, docker step)
  3. 03reconserver already deployed (container, volume, /opt/ark)? healthy → verify and skip; never reset a world or a save
  4. 04reconports 7777, 7778 and 27015/udp free?
  5. 05reconRAM ≥ 8 GB (16 GB recommended) and ≥ 30 GB of free disk
  6. 06reconactive firewall (ufw or firewalld)? a port is only opened if one is active
  7. 07actInstall Docker Engine + Compose (only if missing)verify
  8. 08actCreate the dedicated ark user and its foldersverify
  9. 09actGenerate the admin password (+ player password only if provided)verify
  10. 10actStart the ARK serververify
  11. 11actOpen 7777-7778/udp + 27015/udp (only if a firewall is active)verify

What it verifies

Each step ships its own check. The run only moves on when the check passes, so what the recipe reports as done is what is actually on the server.

  1. 01Install Docker Engine + Compose (only if missing)Verified bysystemctl is-active docker && docker compose version
  2. 02Create the dedicated ark user and its foldersVerified byid -u ark && stat -c '%U' /opt/ark/data
  3. 03Generate the admin password (+ player password only if provided)Verified bystat -c '%a' /opt/ark/ark.env && grep -c '^ADMIN_PASSWORD=.' /opt/ark/ark.env
  4. 04Start the ARK serverVerified bydocker inspect -f '{{.State.Status}}' ark
  5. 05Open 7777-7778/udp + 27015/udp (only if a firewall is active)Verified byufw status 2>/dev/null | grep -cE '7777:7778|27015'; firewall-cmd --list-ports 2>/dev/null; true
  6. 06The server runs without a restart loopVerified bysleep 270; docker inspect -f '{{.State.Status}} {{.RestartCount}}' ark

Guardrails

Non-negotiable instructions the run must respect, whatever it finds on the server.

ARK: Survival Evolved only (not Ascended). RAM < 8 GB → stop and report; < 16 GB → warn. Passwords in /opt/ark/ark.env (600), never in logs. The container runs as the ark user, not root. Never reset an existing save. Do not expose RCON.

How a recipe runs in Servor

Servor is zero-knowledge: the platform cannot execute anything on its own. When you launch this recipe, a run reads the reconnaissance, plans the steps and asks for your approval. Each approved command is signed by your browser — with a key the server never sees — then relayed verbatim to the agent, which verifies the signature locally before executing.

actinstall fail2ban · write default jails✓
actenable service · restart sshd (safe)✓
verifytest ban 60s · jails active · sshd alive✓

search by intent — type “firewall”, get ufw

  • 01Read-only reconnaissance before any change
  • 02Every command signed by your browser, approved by you
  • 03Each step verified before the run moves on, every run kept in the history
