The playbook

The run starts read-only: the recon probes decide what happens next. The steps that follow are adapted to the distribution and state found — a real machine is rarely clean.

  1. 01reconthe distribution: apt (Debian/Ubuntu) or dnf (RHEL/Fedora/Rocky/Alma)
  2. 02reconUFW installed? already active? existing rules?
  3. 03reconthe effective SSH port(s) (sshd_config or ssh.socket on Ubuntu ≥ 22.10) — this port must stay open
  4. 04reconwhich ports listen publicly (so as not to cut an expected service)
  5. 05reconanother firewall active (firewalld → STOP); Docker (its published ports bypass UFW)
  6. 06reconIPv6 handled by UFW (IPV6=yes expected)
  7. 07reconopen SSH sessions and the admin IP that must never be blocked
  8. 08actInstall UFWverify

What it verifies

Each step ships its own check. The run only moves on when the check passes, so what the recipe reports as done is what is actually on the server.

  1. 01Install UFWVerified byufw version
  2. 02Allow the SSH port BEFORE anythingVerified byufw show added
  3. 03Open the requested ports (only if ports are provided)Verified byufw show added
  4. 04Deny incoming by defaultVerified bygrep -E '^DEFAULT_(INPUT|OUTPUT)_POLICY' /etc/default/ufw
  5. 05Arm the safety net (auto-disable in 10 min)Verified bysystemctl is-active servor-fw-guard.timer
  6. 06Enable the firewallVerified byufw status
  7. 07Disarm the safety net (after checking SSH access)Verified bysystemctl is-active servor-fw-guard.timer

Guardrails

Non-negotiable instructions the run must respect, whatever it finds on the server.

ALWAYS allow the effective SSH port (sshd -T / ssh.socket) before enabling, never just 22 out of habit. Do not enable UFW if firewalld or another firewall is active: STOP and ask. Never run ufw reset. Keep allow outgoing (agent tunnel). Warn that Docker-published ports bypass UFW. Only disarm the safety net after verification.

How a recipe runs in Servor

Servor is zero-knowledge: the platform cannot execute anything on its own. When you launch this recipe, a run reads the reconnaissance, plans the steps and asks for your approval. Each approved command is signed by your browser — with a key the server never sees — then relayed verbatim to the agent, which verifies the signature locally before executing.

  • 01Read-only reconnaissance before any change
  • 02Every command signed by your browser, approved by you
  • 03Each step verified before the run moves on, every run kept in the history
